Corey Harris & Henry Butler
Born 1969 in Denver, CO, Corey Harris sings and plays guitar like he was born somewhere between Louisiana and North Caroline around the turn of the last century. That doesn't mean he's a museum piece, however -- since debuting with 1995's Between Midnight and Day, Harris's music has always sounded uniquely fresh and alive. A professed lover of all forms of music, Harris grew up diggin' Hee Haw and Soul Train, but began getting into the blues at the age of 12, when his mother bought him a guitar and a Lightnin' Hopkins record. After college, he strapped his National steel guitar to his back and went off to Cameroon, where he delved deeper into the roots of acoustic blues. He then returned to the US, where he busked on the streets of New Orleans before signing to Alligator in 1994. His latest album, Vu-Du-Menz, is a critically-acclaimed collaboration with legendary New Orleans pianist Henry Butler. |
