Insane Clown Posse
A Horatio Alger story in greasepaint and nail polish, the Insane Clown Posse has risen from a pair of two-bit hoodlums to one of the most succesful independent acts in the music biz, all in less than ten-years' time. Violent J (Joseph Bruce) and Shaggy 2 Dope (Joseph Utsler) met while in high school in suburban Detroit; fascinated with rap and gangsta life, they started their own street gang (Inner City Posse) and began putting out their own rap records. When the annoyed attention of some of the Motor City's real gangs caused the ICP to fall apart, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope changed the name of their act to Insane Clown Posse, adopting a demented circus-type stage routine to go with it. Detroit audiences soon began to flock to the duo's live shows, where they'd be drenched in endless gallons of Faygo soda while witnessing the bizarre, one-of-a-kind spectacle that is an Insane Clown Posse performance. The duo's gospel soon spread to the hinterlands, and the ICP has since gone on to sell millions of records, despite the fact that their material has always been way too raunchy for commercial radio or MTV. Their latest album, Bizarre/Bazaar is due in the fall of 2000. |
