Barenaked Ladies
Originally hailing from Toronto, Barenaked Ladies are among a handful of Canadian bands that have achieved major success north of the border early in their careers, only to find the American market a little tougher to crack. BNL formed in 1988, blending alternative pop with dashes of folk and country to create an interesting hybrid sound. In 1991, BNL hit the right formula with their smash single, "Be My Yoko Ono," which drove the similarly titled EP to gold status. That success landed them on Sire, who released the band's 1992 breakthrough hit album, Gordon, which languished at #1 for eight weeks and earned them a Juno Award for Album of the Year in Canada. 1994 saw the release of Maybe You Should Drive, another huge Canadian hit, which helped broaden the group’s fanbase in America -- spurred by college radio's exposure of "Jane" and "Alternative Girlfriend." BNL finally made a dent in the American market with the release of Born on a Pirate Ship in 1996, which spawned the radio hit "The Old Apartment." The band's constant touring began paying big dividends, and resulted in 1997's live document Rock Spectacle, which featured a sizzling live version of "Brian Wilson" (from Gordon), became a radio sensation. With the release of 1998's Stunt, and the monster hit “One Week,” Barenaked Ladies finally became every bit as renowned in the United States as Canada. |
