The Band
One of the most influential bands of the 1960s and '70s, The Band spearheaded a paradigm shift that saw musicians in the US and (especially) England jettisoning paisley shirts and wah-wah pedals in favor of an earthier sound and look. Drummer Levon Helm, guitarist Robbie Robertson, bassist Rick Danko, pianist Richard Manuel and organist Garth Hudson all cut their chops as members of The Hawks, the hard-touring backing combo of Arkansas rockabilly legend Ronnie Hawkins. When Bob Dylan picked them to back him on his controversial "electric" tour of 1965-'66, he took The Hawks off the American roadhouse circuit and into rock history. After the tour, The Hawks (soon to be re-christened as The Band) reconvened in a house near Woodstock, New York, and spent the next two years playing and making demos with and without Dylan. Music From Big Pink, The Band's debut, was released in 1968 to almost universal acclaim, as was their self-titled follow-up. Unfortunately, the group began to grow ever more reliant on Robertson (or, depending on who's telling the story, more dominated by him); and when his songwriting abilities dried up, so did The Band's fortunes. The Band played their farewell gig in San Francisco on Thanksgiving, 1976, though the other members have occasionally reformed to tour and record without Robertson. Manuel took his own life in 1986, while Danko passed away in 1999. |

This alternate take from the Music From Big Pink sessions differs only slightly from the officially-released studio version, but goes a long way towards reminding us what was so damn great about The Band in the first place!
