Bill Nelson
Bill Nelson may well be one of pop music's greatest geniuses, but odds are you've never heard him -- not for a lack of persistence on Nelson’s part, though. From 1971's solo release Northern Dream to his founding of Be Bop Deluxe, or his dozens of solo albums, Nelson has remained one step beyond his contemporaries, while maintaining a shadowy public persona. No matter what the format, Nelson's signature aura haunts the tracks like a welcome ghost. Once known for his dynamic guitar flash in the "Deluxe" days -- check out 1977's Live in the Air Age -- he now creates lush, textured material relying more on mood and sound than speed and volume. The sheer mass of his output is staggering; nearly 50 solo and group recordings, including 3 releases with "Channel Light Vessel," a sort of "ambient supergroup" featuring Nelson, Roger Eno and Kate St. John. Each record reveals yet another side of his talent, as evidenced on his 2000 release, Whistling While The World Turns, which sounds at times like a British version of The Band. For a quiet Brit living and working in relative seclusion in his childhood hometown, Bill Nelson has proven himself to be a lion of contemporary music, an artist who truly sounds like no other. Dip your hand anywhere in his musical stream and prepare to come away amazed. |
