Deep Purple
One of the greatest hard rock bands of the 1970s, Deep Purple was also possibly the most frustrating. Their 1969-1973 lineup (best known to aficionados as Purple Mk.II) was absolutely loaded with talent: Founder Ritchie Blackmore is still considered to be one of the finest guitarists of the rock era, while vocalist Ian Gillan molded the air-raid siren template for such subsequent metal howlers as Rob Halford of Judas Priest and Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. Classically-trained organist Jon Lord cranked his deft solos through distorted Marshall stacks, while the rhythm section of bassist Roger Glover and drummer Ian Paice swung as hard as they rocked. And yet, the band only occasionally lived up to their full potential (1970's In Rock, 1972's Made In Japan), while external pressures and internal conflicts caused this version of the band to explode after just four years. Since then, there have been numerous lineup changes (including vocalists David Coverdale and Joe Lynn Turner) and reformations, with MK.II even reuniting for a few years in the mid-'80s. Currently, the band consists of Gillan, Glover, Lord and Paice, with former Dixie Dregs axman Steve Morse on lead guitar. |
