Welcome !
    The Glands
Springing from the same fertile Athens, GA, scene that spawned such success stories as R.E.M. and the B-52's, the Glands bring together such a diverse mix of influences that it’s not easy for critics to pigeonhole them. That should come as no surprise, considering the foursome's history: drummer Joe Rowe spent time in the University of Georgia Red Coats Marching Band before dropping out to play in a series of local bands; bassist Craig McQuiston was recording for the Dischord label in touring bands since he was 16; multi-instrumentalist Doug Stanley has worked with artists as disparate as Love Tractor and Rick Springfield; and frontman Ross Shapiro comes from a visual arts background. Coming together in the mid-'90s as a loose assortment of friends for a recording project/social outing, the foursome jelled, and hosted a series of all-night recording sessions, bringing in several Athens-area friends for what would become their debut album, 1997's Double Thriller. The album was an immediate critical success, drawing comparisons to everyone from Nick Drake to Nick Cave and from Big Star to Sly Stone. Interestingly, the band didn't really start working as a live act until the album was released; their second show ever saw them winning rave reviews at 1997's version of Austin's annual South By Southwest music festival/industry schmooze-fest. Taking some time to reorganize their thoughts, the band resurfaced in 2000, signing to Capricorn Records for their self-titled sophomore full-length. The band also took time to record "Straight Down Lovetown," a new song available exclusively at MUSICBLITZ.
