Joan Osborne
Grammy Award nominated singer/songwriter Joan Osborne hesitantly embarked on her career in 1993 when, at the urging of friends, she sang Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child” at an open mic night at a New York club. In 1992, Joan formed her own label, Womanly Hips, and released a live LP, Soul Show, followed by the EP, Blue Million Miles; she signed with Mercury Records not long after. In March, 1995, Osborne’s major label debut, Relish hit the shelves, spawning the chart-topping hit “One of Us” (penned by Hooters frontman Eric Bazalian), and garnering Osborne a whopping seven Grammy nominations. Although she went home empty handed, the success of Relish was undeniable, selling over 3 million copies in the U.S., and garnering a nod from Entertainment Weekly as Album of the Year. Early Recordings, which contained tracks from both of her earlier independent EP’s, was released in 1996. In 1997, she took part in the famed, all-female Lilith Fair festival. Fall 2000 saw the release of her second full-length album, Righteous Love. |
