Jimi Hendrix
What can you say about Jimi Hendrix that hasn't already been said? Between late 1966 -- when the first Jimi Hendrix Experience single was released in England -- to his premature death on September 18, 1970, the man did more to revolutionize the role of the guitar in rock music than anyone before or since. His influence has been felt by everyone from Sly Stone and Funkadelic to Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and his songs have been covered almost as many times as Bob Dylan's or Lennon and McCartney's. Though he only released four albums during his life (five if you count Smash Hits), his prolific approach to recording has ensured a steady stream of new Hendrix releases -- some legit, others less so -- over the past 30 years. That his legacy still endures is underlined by the recent opening of Seattles' Experience Music Project museum, and by the anticipation greeting the new Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, a four-CD collection of previously unreleased rarities. |
