John Lee Hooker
He might have been born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on August 22, 1917, or August 17, 1920, but John Lee Hooker's influence and importance on modern blues remains uncontested. Usually armed with only a loud electric guitar and an insistent right foot, John Lee has pretty much written the book on blues rhythm guitar, and his disciples include everyone from Keith Richards and Jimmy Page to George Thorogood and John Spencer. After an apprenticeship with Memphis bluesman Robert Nighthawk, John Lee moved to Detroit in the late 1940s, and began cutting records of his own. Since then, his career has experienced several peaks and valleys -- his two most notable revivals occured in the 1960s, when he was championed by British acts like The Animals and The Rolling Stones, and the early 1990s, when all-star albums like The Healer and Mr. Lucky brought him back into the charts. John Lee currently lives in the Bay Area, happily enjoying his fame from a semi-retired perspective. |
