Welcome !
    Louis Armstrong
One of the most important figures in the history of American music, Louis Armstrong single-handedly turned jazz into an improvisatory, solo-oriented art form; he also popularized "scat" singing, and made it acceptable to combine the technical profiency of jazz with the gutbucket feel of blues. Born August 4, 1901 in a New Orleans ghetto, Louis grew up singing in streetcorner vocal quartets. Arrested at the age of 12 for firing a pistol in the air, Louis was sent to live in a juvenile home, where he learned to play the cornet; upon his release two years later, he began gigging around town with various brass bands and jazz ensembles. In 1922, he moved to Chicago to join King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band; by 1924, Louis' reputation was such that he was recording regularly with other acts, including popular blues singers Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. In 1925, he formed the Louis Armstrong Hot Five (alternately known as the Louis Armstrong Hot Seven), the first of his many successful studio groups; by 1929, he was the most popular black recording artist in the world. The next two decades saw him record hundreds of classic sides, as well as appearing in several Hollywood film productions. With his gravelly voice and friendly manner, "Ambassador Satchmo" had an appealing presence that even non-jazz fans responded to; though his critical standing diminished somewhat during the 1950s and 1960s, his fame only increased thanks to pop hits like "Blueberry Hill," "Hello, Dolly!" and "What A Wonderful World". Louis died in 1971; in 1990, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a forefather of rock music.
