Tsar
A pop-savvy quartet from Los Angeles, Tsar specialize in mixing the melodic crunch of vintage Cheap Trick with the surreal lyrical view of glam icon Marc Bolan or Welsh popsters The Pooh Sticks. Jeff Whalen (vocals, guitar), Daniel Kern (guitar), Jeff Solomon (bass) and Steve Coulter (drums) all grew up in L.A., and met while attending college in Santa Barbara; though the four of them played together in various bands during their school years, none of them had any intention of pursuing music after graduation. But in 1998, Whalen relocated to L.A. with the intention of starting a new band, and convinced Kern to become his lead guitarist. Shortly thereafter, the two reconnected with Solomon and Coulter, and Tsar was born. A series of high-profile gigs at L.A.'s Spaceland club led to a large local following and a contract with Hollywood Records. The band's self-titled debut was released in the summer of 2000, followed by an opening slot on Duran Duran's American tour. |
