The Gram Parsons Notebook
When Gram Parsons died in 1973, the “Cosmic Cowboy” left behind journals that he used to write down ideas for songs. His sister, Avis Parsons, passed one of these notebooks along to Gram’s friend and former International Submarine Band-mate John Nuese. When Nuese met Mike Ward some 20 years later, he found in him a musician with the same sensibilities as Parsons. Ward took the journal to Los Angeles in 1995 in hopes of finding other songwriters to help complete some of the Parsons compositions contained in the notebook. Country songwriter Jim Lauderdale was among the first approached to work on the project. Others, including Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart, Ed Bergoff, Eddie Cunningham and Eddie Dunbar, were also given a chance to help write Parsons songs. The result is more than just another Gram Parsons tribute record. The Last Whippoorwill (2000) is to Gram Parsons what Wilco and Billy Bragg’s Mermaid Avenue was to Woody Guthrie. |
