Cowboy Junkies
This Toronto quartet carved out its own slice of rock history with its second album, 1987's "The Trinity Session." Recorded for almost nothing in just one day at a local church, the record introduced the world to Margo Timmons' hushed, haunting vocals, as well as her bandmates' grasp of atmospherics and love of classic country, blues and rock (songs by Hank Williams and Lou Reed appeared on the disc). The group, which also includes Timmons' songwriter/guitarist brother Michael, has refined its M.O. slightly since then, veering between restrained country and alt-rock guitar power on albums like "Lay It Down" and 1998's "Miles From Our Home" (the latter produced by Radiohead knob-twiddler John Leckie). Cowboy Junkies released Rarities, B-Sides, and Slow, Sad Waltzes in 1999, an odds-and-sods collection on the band's own Latent Recordings, and Waltz Across America (live recordings 1999-2000) in 2000, available exclusively through the band's website. |

Snare drums a-snapping, ivories a-tickling … It may not be the Junkies’ defining moment, but “A Few Simple Words” warrants of repeated spins!

The sedatives have subsided and the Junkies have more pep in their step than we’ve come to expect. Band’s rocking alter-ego kicks it up a notch here – and almost succeeds in silencing its mature evil twin. Almost…
