Welcome !
    David Was
One of the most admired and sought-after producers in the music business, David Was (nee Weiss) is probably best known as half of the creative duo behind the band Was (Not Was). With his partner, Don Was (born Fagenson), David Was produced and wrote the songs on Was (Not Was)'s five albums, most notably the critically acclaimed commercial smash, What Up, Dog? (1988), which featured the hit "Walk The Dinosaur" and the cult classic "Dad I'm in Jail." The album wound up on a lot of the year's "ten best" lists, with Rolling Stone even including it as one of the 100 best albums of the '80s. David and Don also found success producing other artists, most notably Bob Dylan and a Grammy-winning duet between Roy Orbison and k.d. lang, but due to personal and professional conflicts, split up Was (Not Was) in 1993, after releasing only one more album, 1990's Are You Okay?

David Was spent much of the next ten years producing, working with the likes of Rickie Lee Jones, the Holly Cole Trio, and Wayne Kramer. He's also been heavily sought-out by filmmakers for work as a music supervisor, executive producing the successful Songs in the Key of X, The X-Files' soundtrack album, the soundtrack for An American Werewolf in Paris in 1997, and the soundtrack to the motion picture The X-Files: Fight The Future in 1998. This success led to him being chosen as an orchestrator for the 2000 Academy Awards broadcast.

As a composer, Was has scored several television ad campaigns, notably for the likes of Microsoft, Toyota, and Bongo Jeans, and has co-written songs with the likes of Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, Bonnie Raitt, and Marshall Crenshaw. Recently, David and Don Was have finally settled their differences, and have begun work on a new Was (Not Was) album, expected in the spring of 2001. David Was also recently recorded a new song, "Chow Mein Street," that's available exclusively at MUSICBLITZ.
