6gig
Winner of 'Best New Band' and 'Best New Extreme Band' at Maine's Phoenix Music Awards, 6gig were signed after only their fifth gig, after being together only five months! That's not to say that the members are inexperienced, though: guitarist/vocalist Walter Craven, guitarist/backing vocalist Steve Marquis, bassist Weave, and drummer Dave Rankin are all veterans of the fertile Portland scene -- Portland, Maine, that is. The members of what would become 6gig brought together the disparate influences of the bands they were in when they met to create their own sound -- Craven bringing a pop sensibility, Marquis adding a heavier rock sound, and the rhythm section providing punk rock energy. Taking their name from Craven's 6 gigabyte hard drive on his computer (though the band likes to tell interviewers the name was Craven's nickname, having been fired from his last six jobs!), 6gig quickly gained a following in New England, and came to the attention of Ultimatum Records. The label arranged a showcase gig for the band, opening for the Goo Goo Dolls in South Carolina, and 6gig received such a warm reaction from the crowd that the label was convinced to sign them right away. Stints on the road with Godsmack, Disturbed, Fu Manchu and J Mascis have helped the band get their chops up in preparation for a busy year to come. They released their debut album, Tincan Experiment, on Ultimatum Music in 2000. |
