Bratmobile
One of the seminal bands of the riot grrl movement, Bratmobile debuted in 1991 at Olympia, Washington's International Pop Underground festival. Singer Alison Wolfe, drummer Molly Neuman, and guitarist Erin Smith had a lot of trouble getting together to record, being spread out all over the map (on in California, another in Washington, and the third in Maryland), but they managed to get together for a few singles through their first two years together, and finally released their debut full-length, Pottymouth, in 1993. Despite gaining critical praise and a rabid fanbase, the geographical difficulties proved to be too much, and after a follow-up EP, 1994's The Real Janelle, the band called it quits. As Neuman joined the Peechees and Smith and Wolfe formed Cold Cold Hearts, an EP of tracks recorded from the BBC's The John Peel Show was released, and most thought that would be the end for Bratmobile. Surprisingly, though, the trio reunited in 1999 to play a series of shows with fellow riot grrl alumni Sleater-Kinney, and chose to stay together afterward, releasing a new full-length, Ladies, Women, and Girls, in 2000. |
