The Eagles
The pre-eminent disseminators of the laid-back "California Sound," The Eagles were one of the biggest American rock groups of the 1970s. Formed at the beginning of the decade by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner (all of whom had been members of Linda Ronstadt's backing group), the band achived almost instant success by combining the "cosmic country" stylings of Gram Parsons with a smooth, FM-friendly rock sound. The Eagles scored ten Top 10 singles between 1972 and 1980, topped the charts with four different albums, and Their Greatest Hits: 1971-1975 has sold upwards of fifteen million copies to date. Former James Gang guitarist joined the band in 1976, just in time for the recording of Hotel California, which most Eagles fans still view as the band's finest outing. Drug and ego problems gradually took their toll, however, and the band called it quits in 1981. Henley and Frey both achieved numerous hits on their own, but managed to clear the air of bad vibes long enough to reunite the band for a 1994 tour. In 1999, The Eagles played a much-publicized New Year's Eve gig at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. |

This goofy party song does have a few merits -- after all, every live set needs a number where the smokers can duck outside for a minute and be confident they're not missing one of the classics.

A bloodlessly competent version of one of their biggest hits, recorded live in L.A. on New Year's Eve 1999.
