Mya
A D.C. dancer who joined young up-and-comers like Brandy and Monica in the teen R&B diva boom of the late ‘90s, Mya Harrison brought out the A-list for her 1998 debut. No less than Babyface, Grammy-winning songwriter Diana warren and No Limit soldier Silkk Tha Shocker turned out to make “Mya” a success, albeit one that was long-planned. Mya had been a part of the dance troupe T.W.A. (Tappers With Attitude) and had studied at the Dance Theater of Harlem with renowned Broadway dancer Savion Glover -- who even requested her to dance solo at the Kennedy Center. But she hung up her tap shoes for a career in music, which was aided by her father, a professional musician. He used his contacts to get Mya signed to Interscope, where her first album took two years of writing and planning. Despite the heavy-hitting help, it was Mya’s cameo on ex-Fugee Pras’ hit “Ghetto Superstar” that really catapulted her into the big time, setting the stage for some 1999 appearances at Lilith Fair and, eventually, for her 2000 sophomore album, Fear of Flying. The guests were still out in force -- Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC and Wyclef Jean among them -- to support the young vocalist, now all of 20. |

The D.C. diva’s OK on this slammin’ dance track, but it’s the production of Jam & Lewis that’ll have you saying “My, my Mya!”
