O-Town
O-Town are the five lads chosen (from a group of 25 hopefuls) by Lou Pearlman, the schmuck behind the success of Backstreet Boys, N*SYNC, and LFO. Their pre-"rise to stardom" was documented in the ABC reality series Making the Band which premiered in March 2000. In its first season, viewers got a glimpse of the emotional highs and lows of "talented" young men on the journey to musical success. Jokes aside, the band was "made" through three rounds of finals. As the show explained, 25 became 8, 8 became 5, and 5 were "makin' the band." As if making it weren't enough, 2 of the 8 actually ended up leaving the group.
In the end we were left with Ashley (the heartthrob), Erik (the bad boy), Dan (the odd man out), Trevor (the stud), and Jacob (the fearless leader with the baby face). Lou set-up a few showcases to shop the boys around to record execs and the MTV folks and O-Town was finally picked up by J Records, a joint venture between Clive Davis and BMG Entertainment. With the release of the first single "Liquid Dreams," J Records made Soundscan history as the first label to have its first release debut at #1, while O-Town became the first new artist to land at #1. Their debut album hits stores January 2001. |

Observe as TV's pre-fab five give "Liquid Dreams" to the teenage girls of America with this generic, by-the-numbers boyband weeper. Next to these dorks, 'N Sync sound like King Crimson.
