Damien Jurado and Rose Thomas
Singer/songwriter Damien Jurado first made a name for himself in the mid-'90s Seattle scene. Issuing a series of cassettes on his own Casa Recording Co. label, his distinctive "urban folk" sound quickly found a cult following that included Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk. It was Enigk's efforts that got Jurado signed to Seattle indie stalwart Sub Pop, and after releasing a couple of well-received singles, the label issued his first nationally-distributed full-length, Water Avenue S, in 1997. 1999's follow-up, Rehearsals For Departure brought with it an astounding amount of critical acclaim, leading to two completely different and well-received albums in 2000: the experimental sound collage project Postcards and Audio Letters (completely made up of audio bits culled from tapes found inside thrift store cassette players and answering machines), and the "proper" musical follow up, Ghost Of David. Also in 2000, Jurado was tapped to appear on Sub Pop's Badlands, a tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska album, alongside such heavy hitters as Ani DiFranco, Son Volt, Johnny Cash, and Los Lobos. |
