Fear Factory
Metal vets Fear Factory have been an LA institution for over a decade, having formed in 1990 as vocalist Burton C. Bell, guitarist Dino Cazares, and drummer Raymond Herrera. After adding bassist Andrew Shives, the Factory first unleashed their groundbreaking techno-metal fusion on record with Soul Of A New Machine in 1992. Their first EP experiment, 1993’s Fear Is The Mind Killer, started a tradition of remixes and electronic digressions based on their dissonant metal roots -- marked by the addition of Front Line Assembly remixer Rhys Fulber as a touring keyboardist. 1993 also saw Cazares and Herrera begin their side lives as members of the south-of-the-border death metal cage match project Brujeria, a morphing entity that has showcased collaborations with members of Faith No More, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth and unnamed others. In 1994 Christian Olde Wolbers replaced Shives on bass, and 1995’s Demanufacture and 1997’s companion Remanufacture (Cloning Technology) documented lyricist/vocalist Burton C. Bell’s continued immersion in themes of all things cyberistic, furturistic, and apocalyptic. In 1998, Fear Factory released Obsolete, marked by a collaboration with Gary Numan on a remake of his ‘80s new wave nugget “Cars”. 2001 brings the release of the band’s latest futuristic opus, Digimortal. |
