Radiation Kings
The Radiation Kings formed in the mid-’90s, while most of the members were still in high school. Frustrated with the hyper-frenetic pace of the modern ska scene, members Josh Taht (guitar), Brandon Douglas (organ), Justin Charles (bass), Porkchop (percussion), Phil Wartell (drums), Scott Palmer (piano), Phil Rossi (trombone), Andy Gibson (tenor sax), and Lisa White (vocals) joined forces to create a style reminiscent of the old school sounds of Jamaica, influenced by early soul and rocksteady. Thanks to their impressively traditional vibe and White’s powerful, commanding vocals, the band quickly scored gigs in the New York City area. Within two years, the Kings started to gain national exposure through compilation appearances and positive word of mouth. Late in 1998, the band released its debut seven-inch EP, A Look Back at Things to Come, on the highly regarded Stubborn Records label. Produced by Stubborn All-Stars/Agent 99 guitarist Agent Jay Nugent, the EP was lauded for its authentic grittiness, and helped the band earn a showcase at 1999’s CMJ New Music Marathon. Their stunning full-length release, Early Years, produced by head Stubborn man King Django, followed in late 1999. The album and a 2000 tour supporting (and backing) Django solidified the Radiation Kings as one of the most talented traditional ska bands on the scene. |
