Voi Vod
From humble, unmusicial beginnings, Canadian cyberpunks Voivod grew to blaze trails whose importance would not be fully realized for years to come. Originally formed with the stage names of “Snake” (Denis Belanger - vocals), “Piggy” (Denis D'Amour - guitar) “Blacky” (Jean-Yves Theriault - bass), and “Away” (Michel Langevin - drums), Voivod laid out their musical progression for all to see. 1984’s War & Pain and 1986’s supremely titled Rrrooaar were very rough treatises on the merging of punk and extreme metal, with crude, brute-force results. Experimental to the core, Voivod braved the concept album and dove into cyberkenetic and extraterrestial concepts on 1987’s Killing Technology, 1988’s Dimension Hatross, and 1989’s Nothingface. This well-conceived trilogy saw jazz and prog-rock influences muscling out the punk-core leanings of their earlier efforts, and created a lasting legacy of boundary-breaking futuristic metal. 1991’s Angel Rat recording showed the band taking a more commercial turn, and marked the departure of founding bassist Blacky. The band continued to explore the fine line between pop sensibilities and prog-rock excursions on 1993’s The Outer Limits, which would be Snake’s last with Voivod. On 1995’s Negatron, original members Michel and Denis joined with bassist/vocalist Eric Forrest to make Voivod a trio, and form a more stripped-down, aggressive sound mirrored on 1997’s Phobos. 2000 brought the remix release Kronik and the live collection Lives. |

A refreshingly stripped-down, non-nonsense live take from the almighty Voivod – the metallic originators (and only practitioners) of Punk Floyd.
