But while Waits was covered by The Eagles ("Ol' 55"), his gruff, theatrical voice and fascination with society's down-and-outers were worlds away from his Asylum labelmates' smooth stories of life in the fast lane. A string of recordings, including the 1975 double-album Nighthawks At The Diner, won Waits a loyal following, and his cinematic career, which included an acting stint in Paradise Alley and an Academy Award-nominated score for Francis Ford Coppola's One From The Heart, heightened his profile. The 1980’s produced two of Waits' best-known works on Island Records: the adventurous Swordfishtrombones in 1983, and the seminal Rain Dogs two years later. He also continued to act, both in films (Rumble Fish, Ironweed) and on stage (Frank's Wild Years, a play he co-wrote with his wife, Kathleen Brennan). After a long musical hiatus, Waits re-emerged in 1992 with Bone Machine, which won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. He also made some more notable film appearances in old pal Coppola's Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Robert Altman's Short Cuts.
