Sister Carol
Emerging from the highly patriarchal reggae scene in the ‘80s, Carol East combines a rare blast of feminist defiance with the conscious lyrical stylings of her male counterparts. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, East moved with her family to Brooklyn as a teenager, and got her education degree at New York's City College. However, the budding deejay was also interested in music, and recorded her first single, "Black Cinderella," in 1982. Director Jonathan Demme used her in his film Something Wild (she sang "Wild Thing"), raising her profile, and she also appeared in Married To The Mob. In addition, she started her own Black Cinderella label, although she released a trio of mid-90s albums, Call Mi Sister Carol, Black Cinderella and Lyrically Potent on the Heartbeat label. Her latest disc, 1999's Isis: The Original Womb-Man, on the Marleys’ Tuff Gong International label, continues her tough toasts, calling for female self-determination and resisting violence. |
