The Cramps
Look in the encyclopedia under "Psychobilly," and chances are you'll find a black-velvet painting of The Cramps. Since first forming in the mid-1970s, The Cramps have been continuously refining the choicest aspects of late-50s rockabilly and mid-60s garage-rock into a cosmic celebration of trash culture that's frightening, hilarious, and more than a little bit sexy. Led by vocalist Lux Interior and guitarist Poison Ivy, and abetted by a perpetually changing rhythm section, The Cramps have released dozens of recordings. They've never had a Top Ten hit, but their uniquely warped aesthetic has inspired a worldwide cult following; their shows always sell out, and the band never fails to turn each venue into a churnin', burnin' pit of hormonal desire. Forget recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees like Billy Joel and James Taylor -- The Cramps are what real rock and roll is all about. |
