Marilyn Manson
The most controversial rock star of the past half-decade, Marilyn Manson has managed to piss off just about everyone, from the Christian Right (who actually take his "Anti-Christ Superstar" shtick seriously) to rock critics who see him as just a warmed-over version of Alice Cooper. Born Brian Warner in Canton, Ohio, Manson rechristened himself in 1989, when he formed Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids with Scott Mitchell, aka Daisy Berkowitz. Based in Tampa Bay, the group was discovered in 1993 by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, who signed them to his Nothing label and took them on tour. The band's first album, Portrait of An American Family, was released in 1994; each subsequent release has sold better than the last, cementing Manson's status as an American pop icon. The next Marilyn Manson record, In The Shadow of The Valley of Death, is supposed to see the light of day sometime in 2000. |
