Pavement
Lo-fi icon Pavement began as the studio-only project of guitarist/vocalist Stephen Malkmus and his college friend Scott Kannberg. In 1989, the two used a studio owned by drummer Gary Young in Malkmus’ hometown of Stockton, California. Young played drums on the duo’s first EP, Slay Tracks: (1933-1969), recorded for under $1000 and self-released. The record made its way to respected indie label Drag City, and Pavement, now a trio, set to work on a follow-up EP. When they began playing live in 1991, the band added a bassist and second drummer. Soon after, they signed to Matador, which released their debut full-length, Slanted and Enchanted, to critical raves. Young left the band before the sophomore release Crooked Rain, which launched Pavement into the world of mainstream alt-rock. Through three more albums and a slot on Lollapalooza, Pavement never clicked with a mass audience, though they remain one of the most influential bands of the ‘90s. |

Despite their songwriting skill, Pavement didn’t get tagged slackers for nothing. Hear for yourself in this uninspiring live recording of one of their best songs.
