St. Etienne
Combining the melodies of ’60s British pop with the beats and rhythms of England’s post-acid house dance clubs, St. Etienne hit upon a formula which now pervades British pop music, from the catchy songs of Brit-pop to the country’s love on dance beats. Formed by childhood friends Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs in the English town of Croydon, Surrey in 1988, St. Etienne soon grew to encompass singer Sarah Cracknell, whose girlishly breathy vocals have since been the focus of the group’s sound. First breaking onto the British charts in the early ’90s, the group received favorable reviews from the media into the middle of the decade, until, having lost steam, the trio took an extended hiatus in 1996. They later reconvened for their sixth full-length, 1998’s Good Humor, and put out the EP Places To Visitthe following year. This year saw the release of Cracknell’s solo debut, Lipside; Stanley and Wiggs, meanwhile, started a record label for EMI Records in 1996. |
