Debbie Davies
A tiny woman with a big, big guitar sound, Debbie Davies has risen to prominence over the past decade through tireless touring and a prolific recording schedule. Born in 1952 in Los Angles, Debbie was brought up in a musical household (her Dad wrote arrangements for Ray Charles), and was playing in bands by the time she was in her teens. Her big break came in 1988, when blues legend Albert Collins spotted her playing guitar with Maggie Mayall & The Cadillacs, an R&B combo led by the wife of British blues innovator John Mayall. Collins recruited her for his band, and also installed her as his permanent opening act; the arrangement worked well through 1991, whereupon Debbie decided to try leading her own band. The winner of the 1997 W.C. Handy Award for "Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year," Debbie recently released her seventh album, the acclaimed Tales From the Austin Motel. |
