Hefner
Like The Cure in its early days, Hefner is huge in Britain but virtually unknown in America. Singer/guitarist Darren Hayman and drummer Anthony Harding met as art-school students in Kent, then relocated to London (where they met bassist John Morrison) in the mid-‘90s. The three had only played together once before when they recorded their debut single, “Another Better Friend.” A later effort, “Christian Girls,” convinced the Too Pure label to sign them. Aided by Belle and Sebastian producer Tony Doogan, Hefner released its debut album Breaking God’ Heart in 1998. A caustic meditation on failed romance, The Fidelity Wars, appeared a year later. |
