Singer/guitarist Darren Hayman and drummer Anthony Harding met as art-school students in Kent, then relocated to London (where they met bassist John Morrison) in the mid-‘90s. The three had only played together once before when they recorded their debut single, “Another Better Friend.” A later effort, “Christian Girls,” convinced the Too Pure label to sign them. Aided by Belle and Sebastian producer Tony Doogan, Hefner released its debut album Breaking God’ Heart in 1998.
