Tricky
Tricky has played an integral role in the development of trip-hop since the genre’s inception, starting his career with Bristol’s Wild Bunch crew, who later grew into the seminal trip-hop collective Massive Attack. Striking out on his own, Tricky released his debut, Maxinquaye, in 1995, a year after fellow Bristolian trip-hoppers Portishead broke ground in America with their first effort, Dummy. Steeped in hip-hop beats and featuring the talented Martina on vocals, the album was astoundingly well received by critics and public alike, and set the tone for the earlier parts of Tricky’s career, during which he could seemingly do no wrong. Releasing the Grassroots EP in 1996, as well as the Nearly God collaborative effort with artists like Bjork and Neneh Cherry, Tricky put out his proper second album, Pre-Millennium Tension, later that year. His winning streak finally seemed to falter with the release of 1998’s Angels With Dirty Faces, which didn’t do well either critically or commercially. 1999 saw him delving back into his hip-hop roots with Juxtapose, a collaborative effort with Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs and Grease of Ruff Ryders/DMX. It was the first album on which Martina was absent. |
