Dio
One of heavy metal's premier howlers, Ronnie James Dio would deserve a place in hard-rock history just for being the original vocalist in Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, the outfit that gave us such head-banging masterpieces as "Man On The Silver Mountain" and "Kill The King". But his career has also included two stints with Black Sabbath (that's him on the Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Live Evil and Dehumanizer albums), and a solid run as the leader of his own band, Dio. Dio the singer formed Dio the band in 1983, shortly after leaving Sabbath for the first time. The original lineup (which included future Whitesnake/Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell) delivered Holy Diver and The Last In Line, two bona-fide classics of '90s metal, but personnel shake-ups and the rise of pretty-boy pop-metal relegated Dio to third-tier status by the end of the decade. Dio himself briefly reunited with Sabbath in 1992, and still tours and releases solo records on a semi-regular basis. |

Metal’s elder statesman keeps the dream alive with a chugging, leaden-riffin’ version of, well, Dio…or more accurately, Rainbow!
