Enigma
Gregorian chants, sensual beats and breathless vocals are the benchmarks of quadruple-threat (composer/producer/arranger/musician) Michael Cretu's Enigma. In late 1990, the inescapable "Sadeness, Pt.1" from the multi-platinum debut release MCMXC A.D. provided us with our first glimpse of the pop potential of the Gregorian chant. Planted on a sweeping aural landscape backed by smooth beats and rooted in a sonic merger of religion, sensuality and metaphysics, Enigma's sound defies categorization. Cretu's musical vision has resulted in a string of albums which explore the possibilities of a sound collage comprised of flutes, beats, and monks. Two more multi-platinum releases, Cross of Changes (1994) and Enigma 3: Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi! (1996) preceeded the most recent release, 2000's Screen Behind the Mirror. |
