Fu Manchu
Orange County, California’s, Fu Manchu plunder much the same “bong-hit” rock turf as their Blue Cheer/Black Sabbath-inspired peers; they’re usually lumped in with Kyuss, Monster Magnet and Queens of the Stone Age. However, it’s the Fu’s basic four-on-the-floor tuneage and obsession with late 70’s-era gearhead culture and sydicated TV shows (dune buggies, cherried-out vans, The Six Million Dollar Man, etc.) that sets them apart from their trippier sludge-metal brethren. Led by real-life repo-man Scott Hill (vocals, guitars) and co-founder Brad Davis (bass, vocals), the Fu’s honed their visceral gut-pummeling sound on a few singles before releasing No One Rides For Free and Daredevil, both on Bong Load. They later switched over to Mammoth in ‘96 for In Search Of, adding two new Manchurians (lead guitarist Bob Balch and former Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork) before recording The Action Is Go and touring most of the free world. 1998 saw the reissue of their early singles on Return To Earth, and their Eatin’ Dust EP. In early 2000, Fu Manchu released King Of The Road, and now seem to be evolving into a more straight-ahead Detroit-rawk outfit. |

Rock |
Another thick, riff-rock slab from four guys who should probably change the bongwater now and then.
