Kurupt
Philly native Ricardo Brown got his big musical break as a teenager, when he went sent west to live with his father in California. There, he hooked up with emerging West Coast rap stars like Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre, appearing on the two classic G-Funk albums, Doggystyle and The Chronic. Eventually, Brown teamed with Daz Dillinger and formed Tha Dogg Pound, but after that group's 1995 debut, he formed his own record label (ANTRA) and went solo on 1998's Kuruption, a two-disc set that featured "East Coast" and "West Coast" discs and some production by Dillinger. The violence that tainted the rap world in the '90s didn't escape Kurupt; his bodyguard was shot to death just before the release of Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha -- which includes guest spots from Snoop, Dre and Warren G -- in late 1999. |

Rap/Hip Hop |
This woofer-destroying, head-bobbing classic (from the West Coast family that spawned tha Dogg Pound) is a satisfying main course for anyone with a hunger for true hip-hop. It's definitely the breakout from the soundtrack to HBO's prison series "Oz."
