Leslie West
A 300-pound guitarist with an affinity for bluesy riffs and ear-splitting volume settings, Leslie West is a heavy guitarist in more ways than one. Born Leslie Weinstein on October 22, 1945, West grew up on Long Island, where he learned to play guitar and internalized everything from raw R&B to the sort of AM pop-soul purveyed by local heroes the Young Rascals. After gaining local notoriety with the Vagrants, a raucous garage-rock combo who had a minor hit with a cover of Otis Redding's "Respect," West entered the studio with former Cream producer Felix Pappalardi to work on Mountain, his first solo album. The pair were so happy with the album that they formed a group of the same name, which soon established itself as one of the heaviest bands of the Woodstock generation. Best known for the classic-rock staple "Mississippi Queen," Mountain broke up and reformed several times under the weight of various ego and drug problems. West finally rid himself of his chemical dependencies (and much of his trademark girth) in the mid-'80s, and has since toured and recorded with various Mountain lineups (minus Pappalardi, who was murdered in 1983) and as a solo act. In 1999, he released As PHAT As It Gets, his first solo recording in five years. |

Blues, Rock |
Great guitar playing barely justifies the existence of this punishingly stupid blues travelogue. Even die-hard Mountain fans should be embarrassed!
