Ben Harper
A folk-rocker with a solid foundation in the blues, Ben Harper first gained attention playing with his hero Taj Mahal in the early ‘90s. Born and raised outside of Los Angeles, Harper was surrounded by music at an early age, thanks to parents and grandparents who were amateur musicians. Developing an admiration for Bob Dylan and Bob Marley as well as legions of early blues artists, Harper began writing his own songs on the Weissenborn, a lap-slide guitar with a hollow neck. The instrument’s distinctively resonant and supple sound became something of a Harper trademark. In 1994, Virgin Records released the singer-songwriter’s debut, Welcome to the Cruel World, a collection of blues-influenced acoustic tracks displaying a strong political conscience. The next year, Harper scored a film biography of Harriet Tubman called Follow the Drinking Gourd, then reemerged with a stronger pop bent on his sophomore effort, Fight For Your Mind. With each succeeding record, Harper explored more melodic and funkier sounds, yet never compromised the messages behind his music. On 1999’s Burn to Shine, Harper enlisted several guests -- including David Lindley and the Real Time Jazz Band -- and recorded with his own backing band, The Innocent Criminals. |

It’s not just money, romance, and prison that can give you the blues. The prospect of eternal damnation works pretty well too, as you can hear in this vibrant cover of a gospel-blues classic.
