Elliott Murphy (with Bruce Springsteen)
The son of a successful entrepreneur, Elliott Murphy was raised on Long Island, where he formed his first band at the age of 17 – a couple of years later, he was traveling through Europe, busking on street corners with his brother. Returning to America in 1973, he formed another band, Elliott Murphy’s Aquashow, a fixture of the art-rock scene swirling around the NYC clubs Max’s Kansas City and the Mercer Arts Center. Like fellow Max’s alumnus Patti Smith, Murphy also writes poetry -- his other accomplishments include music journalism (for Spin and Rolling Stone) and acting (Fellini’s Roma). Though Murphy released a series of critically acclaimed records in the ‘70s, he never found commercial success in America. European audiences, however, loved his literate folk-rock style, and Murphy relocated to Paris in 1990. He continued to play with various luminaries throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, including former members of Roxy Music, the Smithereens, the Talking Heads, and the Velvet Underground. He still lives in Paris with his wife Francoise and their son Gaspard. |
