Matchbox Twenty
Singer-songwriter Rob Thomas was born on a military base in Germany and raised amid tumultous circumstances in South Carolina and Florida. He dropped out of high school at 17 and spent three years writing songs and hitchhiking around the Southeast before settling in Orlando. Eventually, he hooked up with drummer Paul Doucette and bass player Brian Yale, and the three played together in several bands, achieving some regional success. In 1995, the trio took stock of their music and put together the band that became Matchbox Twenty with Miami guitarist Adam Gaynor and Atlanta Institute of Music student Kyle Cook. Enlisting producer Matt Serletic (who’d scored big with another melodic pop-rock band, Collective Soul) the quintet recorded a few demos. Lava/Atlantic snapped them up, and the five musicians returned to the studio with Serletic, emerging with their 1996 debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You. By 1998, the record was well on its way to selling over 10 million copies, thanks to radio hits like “3 AM” and “Push” -- Thomas even appeared in People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” list. Just as the brouhaha was dying down, the vocalist collaborated with guitar legend Carlos Santana on a song for his 1999 album Supernatural. The resulting Latin-tinged single, “Smooth,” became a platinum smash, winning Thomas three Grammys. In the summer of 1999, Matchbox Twenty regrouped with Serletic to record its sophomore effort, Mad Season. |
