Daddy Freddy
Born Frederick Small, Daddy Freddy is not only the one-time Guinness Book-certified “World’s Fastest Rapper,” he’s also been a crucial figure in the fusion of hip-hop and reggae. Freddy made an auspicious recorded debut, teaming with fellow toaster Asher D for the influential 1988 CD Ragamuffin Hip-Hop, released on the rap label Profile. He then did some work with Norman Cook’s Beats International, appearing on some mixes of the single “Echo Chamber,” and teamed with UK rap/dance producer Simon Harris for his first solo effort, 1991’s Stress, which featured appearances by Asher D and Tenor Fly. It was Freddy’s second solo set that really cemented his reputation, however: Raggamuffin Soldier, released in 1992 on Chrysalis Records, had several tracks produced by Cypress Hill mastermind DJ Muggs, and was his most convincing hip-hop/ragga combination yet. He’s been a sought-after guest, appearing on albums by Heavy D and the Boyz and 311, among others, and has his first new album in years, Old School New School, due in June. |
