Coldcut
Britain’s Coldcut have long prevailed as trailblazers of experimental electronic music, since releasing “Say Kids, What Time Is It?,” the U.K.’s first sample-built record, in 1987. The duo of Jonathan More and Matt Black first teamed up in the mid-’80s, DJing in clubs and on British pirate radio stations. First gaining notoriety for their remix work, which included a roster of future stars such as Yaz and Lisa Stansfield, they soon focused their production genius on their own music. Over the course of their career, they’ve mined technology to piece together a mish-mash of styles, covering everything from breakbeat to ambient. In the live arena, they even sample visual media to create matching videos for their songs. In the early ’90s, Coldcut founded the Ninja Tune label, which has gone on to produce some of the brightest electronic talent today, including artists like Amon Tobin, Kid Koala, the Herbaliser and DJ Vadim. |
