Toni Braxton
Toni Braxton’s father must pray for his daughter every night. A minister, he raised her and her five siblings in a strict Apostolic household where pop music was forbidden. And forget about skin-baring clothes. Trained in the church choir, Toni got her first take of show biz when she and three of her sisters were signed to Arista as modern gospel act, The Braxtons. Toni caught the attention of famed producers L.A. Reid and Babyface Edmonds, who signed her to a solo deal with their La Face Records. When a pregnant Anita Baker had to pass on contribution to the soundtrack to Boomerang in ’92, Toni took her place, scoring a major hit with the song “Love Shoulda Brought You Home.” After her self-titled smash debut LP in ‘93, she revamped her image, emerging as a flashy sexpot for 1996’s Secrets and her latest album, Heat. To date, she has a won two Grammys and a pair of Soul Train Awards. |
