The Jayhawks Formed in Minneapolis in the mid-'80s, when such Twin Cities icons as Husker Du, Soul Asylum and the Replacements were all beginning to bust out of the underground, the Jayhawks were "alt. country" before there even was such a classification. Steeped in the twangy, nakedly emotional music of Neil Young and Gram Parsons, the band built up a solid reputation on the college-rock circuit, and almost broke through to the big time with 1992's acclaimed Hollywood Town Hall. When the stresses of recording 1995's Tomorrow The Green Grass almost broke up the band, co-founder Marc Olsen left -- his former partner Gary Louris continued on, expanding the Jayhawks' sound well beyond the twang barrier. Smile, the band's latest CD, was produced by Bob Ezrin, best known for his work with Kiss, Lou Reed and Alice Cooper. |
