Billy Bragg and Wilco
One of England's foremost left-leaning performers, Billy Bragg has picked up where the socially conscious balladeering Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan left off. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Bragg became the leader of the much-ballyhooed anti-folk movement , releasing 6 full albums and myriad EPs. In 1995, under the aegis of the Woody Guthrie Foundation, Bragg was asked to create music for some of the master’s finished but unrecorded lyrics. To tackle this gargantuan task, Bragg brought in alt.country demigods Wilco to help him flesh out the material -- the result of their collaboration was the stunning Mermaid Avenue (1998). Split between Bragg and Wilco (with Bragg taking the lead in 8 of the 15 songs) and featuring Natalie Merchant, Mermaid Avenue was so well-received by critics and fans alike that the collaborators teamed up again, this time refining the songs left off the original release. The album, aptly titled Mermaid Avenue Volume II, came out in Spring 2000. |
