Karl Denson's Tiny Universe
Reedman Karl Denson, who was part of Lenny Kravitz’s band in the early ‘90s, has had food on the brain for awhile now -- just check out the names of his first three albums. The sax player and flautist first offered up Blackened Red Snapper, a hard bop effort, in 1992, and covered Charles Mingus on 1993’s Herbal Turkey Breast. By 1994’s Chunky Pecan Pie, fans were starting to get the idea that Denson was a culinary champ; Denson was also starting to get more attention, since he was by then leading a trio that included legendary jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Dave Holland. By the mid-90s, Denson had begun playing with the Greyboy Allstars, whose jazzy funk showed the direction he’d move in with his own side project, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. But as “The BBQ Song,” a live recording from that group, shows, Denson’s still a guy who likes his grub. |
