Day By the River
Guiding listeners through an ever-changing sonic adventure, traversing an ever-changing climate of moods, tempos and influences, Day by the River's musical escapades were fueled by a diverse set of influences including rock, funk, jazz and country. Part of the burgeoning jamband genre, which includes the likes of The String Cheese Incident and Widespread Panic, Day by the River (Ted Lahey, vocals; Jason Rabineau, guitar; Walt Austin, keyboards; Pat McDonnell, bass; and Dave Brockway, drums) never achieved the national exposure they deserved before they disbanded. However, with three albums to their credit, Shimmy, Fly, and the MP3 album Watermarks, Day by the River can be included among the genre's many successes. Though the band's story should be depicted foremost as the accomplished creative endeavor of five musicians, sadly, the tale ends abruptly in tragedy. En route to a performance in August '99, the band was involved in an automobile accident which took the life of their sound engineer, Lee Laurence. Ironically, the accident occurred just after the band had decided to call it quits after nearly 10 years, and they subsequently parted ways. Thus, while no longer available to be appreciated in the live setting, the band leaves behind a compelling catalog of music which is a fitting witness to their achievements and appropriate memorial to their companion. |
