Brutal Truth
Formed in 1990, New York City's Brutal Truth hit the grindcore/death metal scene with a satisfying yawp and a head for lyrics that were a sharper than most bands obsessed with death, destruction, violence and despair. Originally consisting of vocalist Kevin Sharp, bassist Danny Lilker, guitarist Brent "Gurn" McCarty and drummer Scott Lewis, the band made serious noise on with their 1992 debut, Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses, on Combat Records. After moving to Relativity for 1993's Perpetual Conversion (which featured new drummer Richard Hoak), the band hit their creative stride with 1994's Need to Control. Combining elements of grindcore, thrash, death metal and punk, the band's sense increasing polish and craft meshed perfectly with Sharp's rage-filled yelps and dark worldview. Cementing the sound with 1996's Kill Trend Suicide, and 1997's Sounds of the Animal Kingdom (both on Relapse Records), Brutal Truth released a collection of live cuts and rarities entitled Goodbye Cruel World following their 1998 break-up. |
