No Doubt
Ska was one of the biggest trends to reemerge after grunge died out in the mid-'90s, due in great part to California's No Doubt. Formed in 1987, the band played on the Anaheim club circuit before attracting the attention of Interscope Records, who signed them in 1991. No Doubt's 1992 debut unfortunately proved a flop, and Interscope denied the band support for its tour or further recordings. No Doubt in turn self-released The Beacon Street Collection in 1995. Interscope, meanwhile, renewed its interest in No Doubt in 1994, and released the band's third album, Tragic Kingdom, in 1995. Based on the dissolution of the seven-year relationship between singer Gwen Stefani and bassist Tony Kanal, the album skyrocketed the band to fame. It produced the hit singles "Just a Girl," "Spiderwebs" and "Don't Speak," became a Top 10 hit, and turned Stefani into a mega-star. No Doubt released their follow-up, The Return of Saturn, in 2000. |
